Chapter Thirteen

The next morning, Everett stood in the kitchen, a cup of coffee in hand. Amabel had closed herself in the bedroom after the call with her father. She claimed she needed time to think and he wanted to respect that, but his bear grew restless with each passing moment. He needed to talk to her, to come clean about the past her father hinted at, and to tell her the truth about her mother’s death.

The truth was the only way. She might deny him as her mate but keeping it from her would certainly mean he’d lose her. The moment the mating bond was formed, she’d find out the truth. They’d already be connected as mates, making the rejection worse than if she refused his claim as her mate now.

“I thought she’d have come out by now.” Grandy sat at the dining table, coffee mug in hand with papers scattered in front of him.

“I can’t wait anymore. I need to explain things to her. I should have done it before.” Everett took another long drink of his coffee, trying his best to push away his exhaustion.

“I know.” Grandy sat his mug aside and scooped the papers together. “I found the official police report from her mother’s death, the one Lambert suppressed, and crime scene photos, though I’d rather not show her those.”

“We knew I’d have to tell her, but it shouldn’t be like this.”

“Tell me what?”

Everett spun around to find Amabel standing in the doorway to the bedroom. A thin tank top hugged her curves, ending just above the waistband of her flannel pajama pants, allowing the barest glimpse of skin as she moved. Her long black hair flowed free around her shoulders, making him want to run his hands through it as he pulled her against him. Instead, he forced himself to stay rooted in place.

“Let’s have a seat in the living room.” Grandy dropped the papers back down and came around the table. “Can I get you some coffee?”

“Someone tell me what’s going on?” She questioned again.

“What your father meant.” Everett sat his mug on the kitchen counter and dropped his hands to his sides. Knowing what he was about to tell her would cause her heartache, he wanted to do something to comfort her, but his touch might have her pulling away. He’d have to rely on Grandy to give her what she needed. “Please go sit.”

“Dad would say anything to get me to come home.” Biting the corner of her lip, she glanced between them.

“Sweets.” Grandy stepped in front of her, his hand out. “Come on. Just come sit and let Everett explain.”

“What’s going on?” She didn’t move. Instead, her gaze stayed on Everett. “I didn’t go into the bedroom because I believed him when he said I shouldn’t trust you. I just needed some time to wrap my head around everything that’s happened. Bringing up Mom’s death…it hurt.”

“Precious.” Before he could stop himself, he crossed the room to stand in front of her. Reaching out, he brushed his fingers along her shoulder, working his way up toward her neck.
